10 supplications
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، ﴿سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ﴾
Bismillāhi wa-l-ḥamdu lillāh, subḥāna lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn
In the name of Allah, and all praise is due to Allah. Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, for we could never have accomplished it. And indeed, to our Lord we will return. (Said when boarding a vehicle.)
Muslim 1342 (Qur'an 43:13–14)اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَىٰ. اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَٰذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ. اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ
Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka fī safarinā hādhā l-birra wa-t-taqwā, wa mina l-ʿamali mā tarḍā…
O Allah, on this journey of ours we ask You for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family left behind.
Muslim 1342بِسْمِ اللَّهِ مَجْرَاهَا وَمُرْسَاهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي لَغَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ
Bismillāhi majrāhā wa mursāhā, inna rabbī la-ghafūrun raḥīm
In the name of Allah is its course and its mooring. Truly my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful. (Said when boarding a ship.)
Qur'an 11:41اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ … سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ
Allāhu akbar … Subḥān Allāh
On a journey the Companions would say “Allāhu akbar” (Allah is greater) whenever they climbed, and “Subḥān Allāh” (Glory be to Allah) whenever they descended.
al-Bukhārī 2993اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الْأَرَضِينَ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَقْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَمَا أَضْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَيْنَ، أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا
Allāhumma rabba s-samāwāti s-sabʿi wa mā aẓlalna… asʾaluka khayra hādhihi l-qaryati wa khayra ahlihā…
O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they overshadow, Lord of the seven earths and all they carry, Lord of the devils and all they lead astray, Lord of the winds and all they scatter: I ask You for the good of this town, the good of its people and the good of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its people and the evil of what is in it. (Said when entering a town.)
al-Ḥākim 1/446أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti llāhi t-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
Repeat 3×Muslim 2708أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ
Astawdiʿu llāha dīnaka wa amānataka wa khawātīma ʿamalik
I entrust to Allah your religion, what has been placed in your care, and the closing deeds of your life. (Said in farewell to a traveller.)
Abū Dāwūd 2600, at-Tirmidhī 3443زَوَّدَكَ اللَّهُ التَّقْوَىٰ، وَغَفَرَ ذَنْبَكَ، وَيَسَّرَ لَكَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ
Zawwadaka llāhu t-taqwā, wa ghafara dhanbak, wa yassara laka l-khayra ḥaythumā kunt
May Allah provide you with piety as your provision, forgive your sin, and make good easy for you wherever you are. (Said in farewell to a traveller.)
at-Tirmidhī 3444أَسْتَوْدِعُكُمُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي لَا تَضِيعُ وَدَائِعُهُ
Astawdiʿukumu llāha lladhī lā taḍīʿu wadāʾiʿuh
I entrust you to Allah, whose trusts are never lost. (Said by the traveller to those he leaves behind.)
Ibn Mājah 2825آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
Āyibūna tāʾibūna ʿābidūna li-rabbinā ḥāmidūn
We return, repentant, worshipping and praising our Lord. (Said on returning home from a journey, after saying Allāhu akbar three times.)
