﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ …﴾ ﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ …﴾ ﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ …﴾ — يَنْفُثُ فِي كَفَّيْهِ وَيَمْسَحُ بِهِمَا مَا اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ
Qul huwa llāhu aḥad · Qul aʿūdhu bi-rabbi l-falaq · Qul aʿūdhu bi-rabbi n-nās (×3)
Recite the three protective sūrahs into the palms, blow into them, and wipe over the head, face and as much of the body as can be reached — three times.
Repeat 3×al-Bukhārī 5017اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ، لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ، لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ، مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِنْدَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ، يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ، وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ، وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ، وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا، وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ
Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa l-ḥayyu l-qayyūm, lā taʾkhudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm…
Allah — there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth … His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Magnificent.
Qur'an 2:255 (Āyat al-Kursī)﴿آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ … رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ، وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا، أَنْتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ﴾
Āmana r-rasūlu bimā unzila ilayhi min rabbihi wa-l-muʾminūn…
The last two verses of sūrat al-Baqarah: “The Messenger believes in what was revealed to him from his Lord …” Whoever recites them at night, they will suffice him.
al-Bukhārī 5009, Muslim 807 (Qur'an 2:285–286)بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Bismika llāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā
In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.
al-Bukhārī 6324بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّي وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، فَإِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ
Bismika rabbī waḍaʿtu janbī wa bika arfaʿuh, fa-in amsakta nafsī fa-rḥamhā, wa in arsaltahā fa-ḥfaẓhā bimā taḥfaẓu bihi ʿibādaka ṣ-ṣāliḥīn
In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it; and if You return it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.
al-Bukhārī 6320, Muslim 2714اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ
Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayk…
O Allah, I submit my soul to You, entrust my affair to You, turn my face to You and rest my back upon You — in hope of You and in fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent. (Whoever dies that night dies upon the fiṭrah.)
al-Bukhārī 6313, Muslim 2710سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ (٣٣)، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (٣٣)، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ (٣٤)
Subḥān Allāh (×33), al-ḥamdu lillāh (×33), Allāhu akbar (×34)
Glory be to Allah (33×), all praise is due to Allah (33×), Allah is the Greatest (34×).
al-Bukhārī 5362, Muslim 2727اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ
Allāhumma qinī ʿadhābaka yawma tabʿathu ʿibādak
O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day You resurrect Your servants.
Repeat 3×Abū Dāwūd 5045, at-Tirmidhī 3398الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَكَفَانَا وَآوَانَا، فَكَمْ مِمَّنْ لَا كَافِيَ لَهُ وَلَا مُؤْوِيَ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aṭʿamanā wa saqānā wa kafānā wa āwānā, fa-kam mimman lā kāfiya lahu wa lā muʾwī
All praise is due to Allah, who fed us and gave us drink, who sufficed us and gave us shelter — how many are there with none to suffice them and none to shelter them.
Muslim 2715اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، رَبَّنَا وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ … أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ شَيْءٌ، اقْضِ عَنَّا الدَّيْنَ وَأَغْنِنَا مِنَ الْفَقْرِ
Allāhumma rabba s-samāwāti s-sabʿ wa rabba l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīm… iqḍi ʿannā d-dayna wa aghninā mina l-faqr
O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things … You are the First, so nothing is before You; the Last, so nothing is after You; the Manifest, so nothing is above You; the Hidden, so nothing is nearer than You. Settle our debt for us and free us from poverty.
Muslim 2713الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhi n-nushūr
All praise is due to Allah, who gave us life after having caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection. (Said on waking up.)
al-Bukhārī 6312الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي فِي جَسَدِي، وَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ رُوحِي، وَأَذِنَ لِي بِذِكْرِهِ
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī ʿāfānī fī jasadī, wa radda ʿalayya rūḥī, wa adhina lī bi-dhikrih
All praise is due to Allah, who restored health to my body, returned my soul to me and permitted me to remember Him. (Said on waking up.)
