18 supplications

• الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَٰذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

  Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī kasānī hādhā th-thawba wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah

  All praise is due to Allah, who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, with no power or strength from myself. (Said when getting dressed.)

  Abū Dāwūd 4023, at-Tirmidhī 3458

• بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

  Bismillāh, Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika mina l-khubthi wa-l-khabāʾith

  In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female evil spirits. (Said when entering the lavatory.)

• غُفْرَانَكَ

  Ghufrānak

  I ask You for Your forgiveness. (Said when leaving the lavatory.)

  Abū Dāwūd 30, at-Tirmidhī 7

• بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

  Bismillāhi walajnā, wa bismillāhi kharajnā, wa ʿalā llāhi rabbinā tawakkalnā

  In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely. (Said when entering the house, then greet the family with salām.)

  Abū Dāwūd 5096

• بِسْمِ اللَّهِ … وَإِنْ نَسِيَ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ

  Bismillāh … (and if forgotten) Bismillāhi awwalahu wa ākhirah

  In the name of Allah. Whoever forgets at the start says: In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end. (Said before eating.)

  Abū Dāwūd 3767, at-Tirmidhī 1858

• الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَٰذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

  Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aṭʿamanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah

  All praise is due to Allah, who fed me this and provided it for me, with no power or strength from myself. (Said after eating; the one who says it is forgiven his past sins.)

  at-Tirmidhī 3458, Abū Dāwūd 4023

• اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِيمَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ، وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

  Allāhumma bārik lahum fīmā razaqtahum, wa-ghfir lahum wa-rḥamhum

  O Allah, bless for them what You have provided them, forgive them and have mercy on them. (A guest's supplication for the host.)

  Muslim 2042

• ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

  Dhahaba ẓ-ẓamaʾu wa-btallati l-ʿurūqu wa thabata l-ajru in shāʾa llāh

  The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills. (Said when breaking the fast.)

  Abū Dāwūd 2357

• بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، ﴿سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ﴾

  Bismillāhi wa-l-ḥamdu lillāh, subḥāna lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn

  In the name of Allah, and all praise is due to Allah. Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, for we could never have accomplished it. And indeed, to our Lord we will return. (Said when boarding a vehicle.)

  Muslim 1342 (Qur'an 43:13–14)

• اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَىٰ. اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَٰذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ. اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ

  Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka fī safarinā hādhā l-birra wa-t-taqwā, wa mina l-ʿamali mā tarḍā…

  O Allah, on this journey of ours we ask You for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family left behind.

• لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لَا يَمُوتُ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

  Lā ilāha illā llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah… yuḥyī wa yumītu wa huwa ḥayyun lā yamūt, bi-yadihi l-khayru wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr

  There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and the praise. He gives life and death, and He is the Living who does not die; in His hand is all good, and He has power over all things. (Said when entering a marketplace.)

  at-Tirmidhī 3428, Ibn Mājah 2235

• اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

  Allāhumma ṣayyiban nāfiʿā

  O Allah, make it a beneficial rain. (Said when it rains.)

  al-Bukhārī 1032

• اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا وَشَرِّ مَا أُرْسِلَتْ بِهِ

  Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayrahā wa khayra mā fīhā wa khayra mā ursilat bih, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā…

  O Allah, I ask You for its good, the good within it and the good it was sent with; and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it and the evil it was sent with. (Said when a strong wind blows.)

  Muslim 899

• اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْأَمْنِ وَالْإِيمَانِ، وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ، وَالتَّوْفِيقِ لِمَا تُحِبُّ رَبَّنَا وَتَرْضَىٰ، رَبُّنَا وَرَبُّكَ اللَّهُ

  Allāhu akbar. Allāhumma ahillahu ʿalaynā bi-l-amni wa-l-īmān, wa-s-salāmati wa-l-islām…

  Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, let this new moon rise over us in safety and faith, in soundness and Islam, and in success at what You love and are pleased with. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah. (Said on sighting the new moon.)

  at-Tirmidhī 3451, ad-Dārimī 1729

• الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ — يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ — يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

  Al-ḥamdu lillāh — yarḥamuka llāh — yahdīkumu llāhu wa yuṣliḥu bālakum

  Whoever sneezes says: All praise is due to Allah. His companion replies: May Allah have mercy on you. He then answers: May Allah guide you and set your affairs right.

  al-Bukhārī 6224

• أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

  Aʿūdhu billāhi mina sh-shayṭāni r-rajīm

  I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. (Said when anger rises — it takes the strength out of it.)

  al-Bukhārī 3282, Muslim 2610

• الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي بِنِعْمَتِهِ تَتِمُّ الصَّالِحَاتُ

  Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī bi-niʿmatihi tatimmu ṣ-ṣāliḥāt

  All praise is due to Allah, by whose favour good things are accomplished. (Said when something pleasing happens.)

  Ibn Mājah 3803

• سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

  Subḥānaka llāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā ant, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk

  Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You; I bear witness that there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. (Said when leaving a gathering.)
